October 27, 2007 — 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
These
three-hour programs are specifically designed for provide secondary teachers
with intensive coursework in each of the major science content areas including
chemistry, physics, earth/space science, and life science. They are optional,
additional-fee events that are open to registered conference participants
on a first-come, first-served basis. Unsold Content Focus Seminar tickets
may be available on-site at the conference. Content Focus Seminars sell
out early, CSTA highly encourages advance ticket purchase. Content Focus
Seminars will be held at the Westin Long Beach Hotel and shuttle service
will be provided.

Through
engaging activities, teachers and their students will gain an enhanced
understanding of the dynamic Sun and aspects of the Sun-Earth system
that affect life and society. Activities include “The Mystery,”
“Energy From the Sun,” “Balloon/Rocket Mission,”
and “Ultraviolet Experiments.” This is designed as a hands-on
professional development experience for teachers, involving them in
actively investigating Sun-Earth phenomena and interpreting results.
Presenter: Greg Schultz,
Education/Outreach Scientist, UC, Berkeley, Space Sciences Lab

In
this session teachers will gain activity ideas to help their students
learn about water on our planet and the diversity of life that lives
within. Although the activities will have a marine emphasis, they
can be easily applied to freshwater environments. Teachers will gain
hands-on experiences in physical oceanography and marine biology as
well as be provided with lessons and materials to implement in their
classrooms on the Monday after the conference. Among the topics we
will address are properties of water; density, temperature, and salinity;
pressure; buoyancy; algae; plankton; invertebrates; fish; and marine
mammals.
Presenters: Keith Miller, Science
Department Chair, Lakewood High School, Long Beach USD
and Stephanie Bauer, Odyssey Academy

- Classical to Modern Physics - A Thematic Approach Using Optics |
Join
us for a refresher course on hot topics in chemistry. This session
will include hands-on activities, content, and strategies for doing
inquiry in the chemistry classroom. Among the topics we’ll address
are gas laws, chemical reactions and stoichiometry, safety issues,
and student misconceptions in chemistry. You’re certain to leave
with increased confidence in your abilities, ready to challenge and
inspire your chemistry students on Monday morning.
Presenters: Laura Henriques, Associate
Professor & Chair, California State University, Long Beach
and Jeff Bradbury, Assistant Professor,
Chemistry, Cerritos College

New approaches
to make difficult topics more accessible to students will be presented.
Participants will do activities on diffraction with white light, then
switch to a hydrogen source to show how classical physics can lead
straight into modern physics. The presenters will also show how to
map electric fields and plot equipotential lines using graphite paper,
and show how multisim simulation software from Electronics Workbench
(freeware version) can be used to teach circuit analysis. Participants
will receive a handout for the labs, and will do each lab after the
introductory presentation and discussion.
Presenters: Graham Robertson, Science
Teacher, Palos Verdes High School and Jim Warren, Science
