About
Cynthia Pridmore
Cindy grew up in Southern California and vividly remembers
the rolling motions of several earthquakes during her youth.
The most notable was the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake, when
she was in 7th grade. Interestingly, one month after that
event, she wrote a career report on being a geologist. Cindy’s
interest in earth science grew over the years and eventually
she went on to receive her BS in geology from Long Beach State
and a MS in geology from San Diego State. As a graduate student,
she discovered she particularly enjoyed field mapping in the
remote desert areas of southwestern Arizona. In 1982 she was
the first woman to be hired by the mineral exploration company
Milchem Inc. to do summer field reconnaissance in the Klamath
and Sierra Nevada ranges.
Over the last 29 years, Cindy has worked in mineral resource
evaluations, fault evaluations, geologic mapping, engineering
geology, and geologic hazards review work for proposed school
and hospital sites. For the last 15 years she has worked in
the Seismic Hazards Mapping Program of the California Geological
Survey (CGS) evaluating earthquake-induced liquefaction hazards
for many communities in Southern California. She is both a
licensed Professional Geologist and a Certified Engineering
Geologist.
Cindy has conducted several CSTA conference earthquake hazard
workshops in recent years and has long been involved in various
educational outreach activities at CGS. She is also on the
Board of Directors for the California Mineral Education Foundation.
Always interested in earth science outreach at a local level,
Cindy routinely interacts with many teachers and students
in the Sacramento area, where she now resides.
