CALIFORNIA SCIENCE
EDUCATION CONFERENCE

OCTOBER 19-21, 2012 • SAN JOSE, CA

PROGRAM STRAND:
COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS (CCSS)

CCSS feature standards for literacy skills in science, history, and technical subjects, and mathematical practices with applications in science. Unlike the Next Generation Science Standards, the Common Core State Standards are already a reality. Implementation has begun in many schools and districts and assessments will begin in 2014. Educators at all grade levels need to have a solid understanding of the Common Core and how they are evolving the way teachers teach and updating what children learn.

In addition, the Next Generation Science Standards will be aligned to the Common Core standards, so having a familiarity with the Common Core will aid you with the future implementation of the NGSS. The eight practices outlined in the Framework (asking questions and defining problems; developing and using models; planning and carrying out investigations; analyzing and interpreting data; using mathematics and computational thinking; constructing explanations and designing solutions; engaging in argument from evidence; and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information) involve skills in communication (ELA) and/or mathematics.

Science teachers do not teach science in isolation of reading and math skills. These new CCSS science literacy standards help teachers to focus on the types of literacy that will be most beneficial for students as they prepare themselves for college and career. The 2012 conference will include both workshops and Short Courses in the Common Core strand.

The following sessions will make up the Common Core [CCSS] strand:
