PFS1: "E" Is for Inquiry
Engage in and explore hands-on science integrating English Language Arts and EL strategies for elementary students using the "5E" model.

Presenter:
CAROL SACKETT, Project Director, WISE Science Program
About the Presenter: Carol has been
an elementary school classroom teacher for over 20 years.
She was a Model Teacher for the Exploratorium Institute
for Inquiry and also worked as a site-based science
resource teacher providing hands-on science for K- 5
grade students. She is a National Board Certified Teacher
and has a Master's Degree in Education with a focus
on science and literacy. Currently, she is Project Director
and science coach with San Francisco Unified School
District's Working to Improve Science Education (WISE)
program, a California MSP project.

PFS2: Getting Three Hours of Instruction from Two Hours of Class: Integrating Math and Science in Middle School Science Classes
Through coordination of topics and schedules, data collected in science classrooms can be analyzed and modeled in the math classroom. This coordinated effort liberates the science teacher from teaching math skills, allowing them to use the time for more productive discussions of science concepts.

Building academic vocabulary, navigating non-fiction
text, increasing writing in science, enhancing an enduring
understanding in science. Explore these and other strategies
for infusing literacy with science at the high school
