Instructional Materials Adoptions Cancelled by Governor;
No New Materials Until 2013
To deal with the state's burgeoning budget deficit, Governor
Schwarzenegger has given maximum flexibiilty to school districts
in the use of state education funds. Funds that had previously
been earmarked to purchaase instructional materials may now
be used for any general education purpose. The governor has,
therefore, suspended all textbook adoptions until 2013, at
which time it is expected that language arts and math materials
will be adopted. The governor also cut funding for the Curriculum
Development and Supplemental Materials Commission (the Curriculum
Commission) which oversees the materials adoption process.
It is anticipated that work on the revised science framework
could be restarted in 2013, with new science materials to
be adopted in 2017. See story for more
details, and check back for any updates.
