California Classroom Science
In a bow to our fragile environment—and to member requests—California
Classroom Science (CCS) will be published online in a
new electronic format beginning with the September issue.
“We feel a responsibility to our planet and to our members
to be as environmentally-friendly as possible,” explained
CSTA president Tim Williamson. “We mail approximately 25,000
copies of CCS five times each year. That’s a lot of trees.
The CSTA board, after long and hard deliberation, concluded
that we could no longer justify such a infringement upon our
environment.”
The CSTA board and staff are actively working on an electronic
design that will continue to bring science educators the same
high level of quality they’ve come to expect in California
Classroom Science while making the publication more interactive
and classroom-useful. CSTA members will be able to take advantage
of special members-only features, and it is anticipated that
the new publication will become a forum for teacher-led discussions
and sharing.
One of the challenges CSTA will face in going green with
CCS is that effective communication with the science teachers
of California will largely depend on having valid, accessible
email addresses for members and non-members alike.
“It’s going to be very important that we have up-to-date
electronic addresses for our members and other teachers who
would like to receive the new electronic version of California
Classroom Science,” stated CSTA executive director Christine
Bertrand. “And, in addition, we need to make sure that teachers
who receive email through their schools aren’t hindered by
any filters the school or district has enabled on their servers.”
CSTA encourages all science educators, informal science institutions,
and science education-related companies who wish to continue
to receive CCS to log
into their member record on the CSTA website and make
sure their current email address is on file.
