MINI-UNIVERSITIES

Mini-Universities are for K – 6 teachers. The nine-hour courses, presented over a three-day period, offer in-depth content instruction in the areas of life science, physical science, and earth/space science. They are optional, additional-fee events that are open to registered conference participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Unsold Mini-Univeristy tickets may be available on-site at the conference on Thursday, October 25, 12:00 pm - 1:25 pm. Mini-Universities sell out early, CSTA highly encourages advance ticket purchase. Mini-Universities will be held at the Westin Long Beach Hotel and shuttle service will be provided.

 Earth/Space Science    Life Science

MU1 - Tools for Scientific Inquiry: Teaching the Practice of Science in the Context of the Sun-Earth Connection and Beyond
Participants will experience how to create conditions for authentic, hands-on, minds-on scientific inquiry in the elementary school classroom by learning how to apply the Science Performance Laboratory, a conceptual change framework, and inquiry tools such as the Scientific Inquiry Wheel Game, Acting Out the Science Story, and the ED3U Inquiry Coaching model.
Presenter: Richard Shope, Science Research Results Analyst, Jet Propulsion Laboratory

MU2 - Water Connects Us All
Apply life, physical, and earth sciences through the watershed. Learn how to do basic water analysis, how to investigate life in the watershed, and how to use those results to determine the health of the watershed and all of the water bodies it influences. This program will include visiting the Los Angeles River and Dominguez Channel Watersheds, hands-on lab activities that are easily transferable to other watersheds throughout the state. Teachers will receive lesson plans, background information, and resource materials to take with them that address the standards and integrate the Education and the Environment principles and concepts. A portion of the program will take place at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium where education staff will guide you through looking at the transfer of energy in studying watershed food webs, the properties of matter found in the watershed, and how to analyze the effects of erosion as well as the impact of humans along the watershed.
Presenter: Linda Chilton, Education Specialist, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

 Physical Science
MU3 - Dirty Little Secrets to Making the Physical Sciences Fun and Easy
Helping students learn key physical science content at appropriate cognitive levels doesn't need to be scary. You will learn simple, practical, hands-on ideas to use right away with content background to make it comfortable.
Presenter: Eric Brundin, K-12 Science Curriculum Leader, Long Beach USD
